Krishna Katha - Verse for meditation - 22/01/2014 - 27/01/2014

Srimad-Bhagavatam Canto 4: Chapter Nine, Text 35

                      svarajyam yacchato maudhyan
                         mano me bhiksito bata
                        isva rat ksina-punyena
                         phali-karan ivadhanah

Because of my state of complete foolishness and paucity of pious activities, although the Lord offered me His personal service, I wanted material name, fame and prosperity. My case is just like that of the poor man who, when he satisfied a great emperor who wanted to give him anything he might ask, out of ignorance asked only a few broken grains of husked rice.

                                PURPORT
In this verse the word svarajyam, which means "complete independence," is very significant. A conditioned soul does not know what complete independence is. Complete independence means situation in one's own constitutional position. The real independence of a living entity, who is part and parcel of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, is to remain always dependent on the Supreme Lord, just like a child who plays in complete independence, guided by his parents, who watch over him. The independence of the conditioned soul does not mean to fight with the obstacles offered by maya, but to surrender to Krsna. In the material world, everyone is trying to become completely independent simply by fighting against the obstacles offered by maya. This is called the struggle for existence. Real independence is to be reinstated in the service of the Lord. Anyone who goes to the Vaikuntha planets or Goloka Vrndavana planet is freely offering his service to the Lord. That is complete independence. Just contrary to this is material overlordship, which we wrongly take to be independence. Many great political leaders have tried to establish independence, but due to such so-called independence the people's dependence has only increased. The living entity cannot be happy trying to be independent in the material world. One has to surrender, therefore, unto the lotus feet of the Lord and engage in his original, eternal service.

We are busy in solving the temporary problems of life, just like dependence or independence. These are temporary problems. Actually we are not independent. We are dependent on the laws of nature. And suppose we become independent, so-called independent, for a few days. That is not independence. Real independence is how to get out of the clutches of these material laws. Therefore Krsna presents before you the problem amongst... We have got so many problems, but that is temporary. Real problem is, Krsna says, janma-mrtyu-jara-vyadhi- duhkha-dosanudarsanam. A man of knowledge should always keep in the front the real problem. What is that? Birth, death, old age, and disease. This is your real problem. So the human life is meant for

Everyone is under the clutches of these material laws. You cannot violate even an inch. And still the rascal, ahankara-vimudhatma, by false prestige, he's thinking that ``I am the master.'' I was asking this morning that what is this independence meaning? Actually, where is independence? This independence, has it meaning? If you are completely under the rules and regulations of the material nature, what is the meaning of this independence? So those who are pandita, they do not take it as independence. They do not take it. Therefore Sanatana Gosvami said, apanara hitahita kichui na jani. ``I do not know what is independence, I am dancing like dog, independence.'' Therefore he says, apanara hitahita kichui na jani.'' How independence I can get, that I do not know.'' Real independence is , as Krsna puts in the Bhagavad-gita, janma-mrtyu- jara-vyadhi duhkha-dosanudarsanam. One who is intelligent, he sees that ``My real problem is janma-mrtyu-jara-vyadhi, birth, death, old age and disease.''

So when we get free from these four problems, that is real independence. Otherwise, there is no independence. I may dance with independence, but any moment I shall have to leave my country, my society, my friends, my family, any moment, ``Get out immediately. No, no independence.'' That is my position. So that is intelligence. So in order to know all these problems of life... Just like Arjuna submitted, and any one has to submit. One has to... Tad-vijnanartham sa gurum evabhigacchet. So Sanatana Gosvami is teaching us by his personal behavior how to approach the bona fide spiritual master and submit before him and putting himself, pranipa, blank. Not that ``I know something and what my spiritual master can teach? I know everything. There is no need of spiritual master.'' No. This will spoil our life. The Vedic injunction is that you must have not a so-called guru but... That is also given definition.
